We can see laptops every where, they’re becoming more and more popular as they are light, portable and personal to each of us. It is like they are nondetachable part of our daily life.

Laptop Battery

But behind every Laptop is lying the power source which runs everything from CPU to DVD Rom, laptop battery at the edge of technology which is getting thinner, more powerful and easier to handle everyday thanks to improvements and researches have been made.
But do we  know enough about them? How to charge-discharge them, how long they will run our laptop and when is the time to replace them…

These articles will help you get a better understanding of a laptop battery and it’s functionality:

  • Does using the wireless network card drain a laptop battery?

Yes, wireless network cards do reduce the battery run time. It is difficult to quantify the adverse effect a wireless card has on battery run time because it varies depending on laptop model and wireless card. The operating system and the software installed with the card may have utilities for conserving battery life.

  • Does disconnecting USB devices from my laptop, help conserve battery life?

Yes, disconnecting USB devices helps conserve battery life. It has also been widely reported that a flaw in Windows XP affects certain Intel based laptops to drain the battery at a faster rate than normal when a USB device is connected.

  • How long should my new rechargeable battery last?

The life of a battery under normal use is around 500 to 900 charge-discharge cycles. This is between one and a half to three years of battery life for the average user. As the rechargeable battery begins to fail the running time of the battery will begin to drain. When a battery can supply only around 30 minutes of charge, it is time for a replacement.

  • What is the run time of a battery? How long will my laptop stay ‘powered’ with the battery?

Run time varies between each laptop. This makes it difficult to predict exactly how long a battery is will last. There are several other factors that affect a batteries run time:

    1. The chemistry and capacity of the battery (Li-ion, Ni-Mh, Ni-Cd)
    2. How old your battery is.
    3. The number of times a file is saved or retrieved from the hard drive or DVD Rom drive.
    4. The type of software being run, i.e. some applications such as games, graphical software or wireless networking will dramatically reduce run time.

But for overall, a realistic predict of run-time for our laptops is between 1.5 to 3 or 4 hours.
